Khmer Handcrafted Artisan Eggs
and Jewelery
This craft uses textiles bought in local markets to cover
wooden beads or duck eggs that have been carefully cut open,
cleaned, and glued back together again. Up to 10 coats of
varnish of various dilutions are applied to each bead or egg,
along with repeated sanding to smooth out the surface. The results are
an array of high quality bead necklaces, bracelets, and eggs
that are both beautiful and unique.
This project has brought pride and happiness to
the HIV-positive women, who enjoy the company of each other and the
admiration of people in their communities. Indeed, where once
they were stigmatized, the women now are role models to others
who must cope with HIV/AIDS and poverty

This painstakingly detailed
craft of artisan eggs uses textiles to cover chicken and
duck eggs. Up to 10 coats of varnish are applied to each
egg, along with repeated sanding to smooth out the
surface. To finish the eggs, a final coat of thin,
diluted varnish is applied. The results are an array of
high quality eggs that are both beautiful and

Bracelet
 Beautiful textiles bought in local markets
are glued on wooden beads made from trees. The
colorful bead bracelets exude the regained joie de vivre
of women with HIV/AIDS. 1
